Ochre Idyls

In this room
fiefdom becomes realm
and ruler I am not

with spare parries
to hobby horse and knight
a child's wonder persists

curtains signal retreat
a pale land cast in shadow
mysterious as coming night

in stocking-darned feet
I make haste pull up the covers
disappear between the sheets
